Shodo Experience in Tokyo – Bringing Anime Names to Life with Brush and Ink

At Shodocafe 7557, located in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo, international visitors can enjoy a hands-on Japanese calligraphy experience. Guests write their own names or favorite words in kanji while learning the beauty and deep meaning behind each character.
Recently, a lovely couple who are passionate anime fans joined our class. Their goal was to write two iconic anime names—Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin and Goku from Dragon Ball—in traditional Japanese calligraphy.
After practicing the basics such as brush handling and stroke order, they carefully completed each character. The results were impressive even to our staff! When we explained the meanings behind the kanji, they were deeply moved to learn how each name reflects the spirit of the character.
At the end of the session, they happily purchased their own calligraphy kits, saying, “We want to keep practicing and maybe even teach others back in our country.”
At Shodocafe 7557, we welcome beginners and anime fans alike. Our standard class lasts one hour, but many guests end up staying for about an hour and a half, taking their time and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Come and experience the charm of Japanese culture through calligraphy!
